Nothing beats the uplifting, flattering effects of having a sparkly white smile, and when you don’t have the time (or money!) to visit your dentist’s office for a treatment, whitening toothpastes can be an easy solution. Do they actually work, though?

“It is important to know that these products are specifically designed to remove external stains from your teeth—stains that are caused by food and beverage consumption,” Los Angeles-based cosmetic dentist Dr. Jon Marashi says. “However, another integral part of tooth color is influenced by internal staining i.e. the color of the tooth enamel as influenced by the dentin color.” Dentin, Marashi explains, is the layer of tooth below the enamel that can get a yellow or darker color. It can be targeted by professional whitening systems that use peroxide to lighten the tooth.

“I think the whitening toothpastes are great adjuncts to professional whitening methods and can help you maintain your teeth color over time,” Marashi continues, “But, depending on how white you want to go, you may need to consult your dentist for a custom, tailored approach using other methods including bonding or porcelain veneers.” As for what ingredients to look for in a whitening toothpaste, the dentist suggests looking for ones with calcium carbonate and hydrated silica, which polish and clean teeth. Shop ones that fit the bill, ahead.
