Gwyneth Paltrow, as Pepper Potts, makes a brief appearance at the end of the 2017 film Spider-man: Homecoming. This may come as a surprise to you if you are Gwyneth Paltrow. The actress, known for roles in such films as Spider-man: Homecoming was a guest on Jon Favreau’s new Netflix program The Chef Show, where a casual mention of the movie sent the Oscar-winner into a tailspin.
First of all, I love that she begins the clip by revealing that she has no idea what the TV show they’re filming is or what will happen to it. Gwyneth Paltrow will come to your house and stand in front of a camera grating an orange with no questions asked. Obsessed with this. Can you imagine having the kind of exposure where you are mid-meal and the thought suddenly occurs to you, “I should find out where this is going”?
“What is this TV show for?” is exactly how I’m going to respond every time one of my friends tries to put me in their Instagram story.
Favreau says he’s not sure, but they got the idea when they were both filming Spider-man: Homecoming. And here’s where the wheels come off. Gwyneth Paltrow looking at Jon Favreau like he’s a lunatic after he mentions a film that she was actually in is the most delicious energy of the day.
The way she says “Spider-man?!” with a vociferous incredulity is sending me. It’s like Favreau said the words “peer-reviewed science” to her. Gwyneth has maybe heard of the movie Spider-man, but she’s not certain. And she definitely wasn’t in it.
Favreau and co-host Roy Choi try to jog Paltrow’s memory by just saying the words “Spider-man” over and over again. Gwyneth Paltrow thinks this is hogwash.
Gwyneth Paltrow completely shutting down the rumors that she was in Spider-man is me running into any ex. “We dated for three years.” “…No.”
Take this energy to an industry happy hour where you’re going to run into a bunch of old coworkers you don’t want to see. Take this to family reunions. Take this to job interviews! “You have a gap in your resumé.” “No.”
Gwyneth Paltrow, this angel, reminds Jon Favreau that she was in a little film called Avengers, so maybe he’s confused. Easy mistake. Side note: it is a relief that she is aware that she filmed scenes for those movies.
Jon is insistent, “You were in Spider-man, also.” Gwyneth responds with a sharp “What?” and it’s clear from her expression that she thinks Jon is losing his marbles.
Finally, he’s able to remind her that the 12-seconds of film she shot coming out of a press conference was for the film Spider-man: Homecoming, starring someone named Tom Holland.
Beloveds, Gwyneth Paltrow was fourth billed on this movie. FOURTH. Before Marisa Tomei! I remember this because I sat in the theater and saw it and thought, “Hm, she was on screen for less than a minute at the very end of the movie. Whatever her agents are selling, I’m buying.” And then I turned to the person next to me and I said, “I wonder if she will remember she did this.” And then I turned to the screen and I said, “No.”
Anyway, Gwyneth is now aware of the movie Spider-man: Homecoming and her pivotal role in it. Next up, someone please find out if she’s ever heard of a little known flick called Se7en.
