When To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before first came out, Lana Condor and Noah Centineo admittedly fanned the flames a bit on fans’ hopes they were dating in real-life. Condor talked about having a spark with Centineo; in one interview, she said that “I’ve never felt chemistry like this ever before with any other actor that I’ve worked with.”
In reality, Condor has a longterm boyfriend she lives with, Anthony De La Torre. She knew what she was doing when she boosted the Centineo dating rumors, she told Cosmopolitan in its new cover story. But she didn’t anticipate what would happen to Torre on social media.
“Noah and I definitely encouraged the speculation,” Condor started. “But it’s because we believe in the story and the characters and we genuinely love each other. You can truly love someone in a very platonic way.”
But that meant Torre became subject to trolls on Instagram who said “horrible things,” among them that Condor should be dating Centineo instead and Torre wasn’t worthy of her. And this deeply affected them, Condor said. “It was so hurtful for both of us. This is supposed to be a good thing. Why are you coming for someone who has no part of this story? If you say you support me, why would you hurt someone I love?”
Condor began discussing Torre in interviews, which helped. (Torre also disabled his comments on Instagram.) “People are starting to understand that you’re not necessarily the person you play onscreen,” Condor said.
And Torre has also been Condor’s regular plus one to industry events. During Golden Globes weekend, the two attended three parties together: the BAFTA tea party, the Art of Elysium’s 12th Annual Celebration, and multiple Golden Globes after parties.
