Who knew a grumpy old cartoon lion could have such a lasting impact? Lion King villainScar would surely be thrilled if he knew how much of a fuss he was stirring in 2019, 25 years after he first appeared on the big screen as the foil to Simba. The trailer for the live-action version of The Lion King was released today, and while some fans thought it lived up to the hype, others were very concerned about how Simba’s wicked uncle looks in the footage—whether it was the color of his mane or the expressiveness of his face.

One person even took the liberty of redesigning the dastardly lion to their own liking:

Another used the hashtag #NotMyScar to convey displeasure:

Scar not only looks different in the new film—he also sounds different. Jeremy Irons voiced the character in the 1994 animated version, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is taking the mantle this time around.

The trailer also showed extended glimpses of characters including young and grown-up Simba and Nala, Pumbaa, Timon, and Mufasa.

Here are some of the funniest, most outraged Twitter reactions to Scar’s new appearance:

Not everyone is mad about Scar’s updated look, though; a few fans praised Scar’s realistic look:

Who knew a CGI lion could be so controversial?

The Lion King will be in theaters on July 19. The film stars Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and John Oliver as Zazu. Find out who’s playing every character here.
