Selena Gomez gave her first TV interview of 2019 on the Tonight Show last night, and there she got into detail about her completed album and what exactly her The Dead Don’t Die co-star Bill Murray was whispering to her in the photos of them that went viral from the Cannes Film Festival red carpet.

“It wasn’t even—first off, that kind of looks weird,” Gomez said, looking at the photo that host Jimmy Fallon showed her of Murray whispering to Gomez. “But he was just saying dumb things, like he would just lean in and be like, ‘You look great tonight.’ And then he’d look back seriously and be like, ‘Where are you from?’ And I would just sit there, and I’m trying to be poised. It was fine. That’s what he did with all the time. In press conferences, he’d try to hit me with things. Yeah, it’s just he’s fun. He’s a big kid.”

Gomez talked more in depth about her upcoming new album, which she has finally finished after years of working on it. It turns out big moments in her personal life had an impact on it (Gomez had a kidney transplant due to her lupus, dated both The Weeknd and Justin Bieber (who she watched date, get engaged, and married to Hailey Baldwin shortly after), etc. all within the years since her last album, Revival, was released in 2015

“I’m actually done [my new album],” she told Fallon. “I have to do a few finishing things with it but I’m just relieved. It took me four years now to even feel at a good place with this album, and it’s just because I had such huge moments that happened in my life personally that ‘how was I going to capture that?’ and ‘how was I actually going to feel good about what I was saying?’ So I just kept going, and I’m relieved.”

Gomez said genre-wise, the album is mostly pop. “I think there’s always going to be a sense of strong pop in my music, but I definitely explored more with electric guitar, a lot of more soulful tracks underneath things, acoustic guitar, it all kind of hits different places that I feel like is my lane for music,” she said. “It’s just, ‘live in that world and mellow.’”

Gomez also admitted her favorite songs to perform are the more emotional ones where she can really talk and connect with her fans. “Yeah, I’d say the more emotional connection [talking with my fans, singing more emotional songs] for me for sure. I love everything I get to do and be a part of, but specifically something that connects with people on a emotional level is my favorite.”
