Opening a bag of chips is pretty standard during a run-of-the-mill grocery run–you’re going to pay for it anyway, so you might as well start munching. But one woman in Ireland learned that it’s not always acceptable to snack before you act when she got arrested and jailed for two months for opening a can of Pringles without paying.

According to the Daily Mail, Kathleen McDonagh was charged with “criminal damage” at a Tesco for doing what all of us do when we grocery shop hungry. McDonagh, a newlywed who was pregnant at the time, had been banned from this specific Tesco on previous offenses. She allegedly went to buy the Pringles before getting asked to leave by staff. Instead, she took the lid off, popped open the can, and insisted “I opened it so you have to let me pay for it.”
She ended up pleading guilty to the charge, because the Pringles couldn’t be put back on sale. McDonagh’s lawyer told court that she was suffering from “anxiety-related issues” at five months pregnant. But due to her previous offenses, she received a jail sentence.
In her sentencing, per The Mirror, the judge claimed McDonagh had been “given the benefit of suspended sentences in the past and they didn’t appear to work for her.” The newlywed has been jailed four months with a two month suspension.
